MAUER KUNST version 1 is right around the corner, we caught up with the two artists who will be performing on Wednesday and found out a little more about them ahead of the big night
Will Barbour Brown

///What is Mauer kunst for you?
I just hope to have a lot of fun with it. There’ll be great music and there’s nothing better than getting together with a few a friends, having a few drinks and doing what you love to do. It’s a great opportunity to have some of your work on a large scale in a busy environment where it will be seen by many people too.
///Is this the first time you have done something on this scale?
Most of the work I’ve done in the past has been in quieter locations such as smaller bars and pubs so Jam will definitely be a new experience. Working with close friends and in a much more lively atmosphere.
///Any influences that will guide you in creating this piece?
Recently I’ve been doing a lot of drawings in a traditional tattoo style from old skool American Sailor Jerry pin up girls to Japanese Karpe and lotus flowers etc etc.
I’ve never done this kind of work on a large scale before but I think/hope that the simplistic and bold style of traditional tattooing will look good being blown up onto a wall. It’s a new challenge for me and I hope to incorporate in somehow at Mauer Kunst.
///Any new ideas especially for the night?
I usually leave these things until I’m standing in front of the wall when I can see what I’m working with. I’m sure the things I’ve been sketching recently will play a part in the outcome. Like I said before, I’ve been doing a bit of work with traditional Japanese styles and with the recent events in Japan it might be nice to do something connected. Gives the piece more meaning and it’s always nice to raise awareness for a good cause. Just an idea but we’ll see what happens on the night.

///How did you get into illustration?
Well I’ve been drawing since before I can remember, my family has always been fairly creative and positive about choosing an artistic lifestyle. I’m very lucky to have them behind me and not forcing me to become something I don’t want. I would say going to university and studying illustration definitely opened my eyes to a lot of areas that I wasn’t aware of within illustration that fed into my motivation. My older brother also studied Illustration at university and was constantly drawing around the house so this will have had a big influence on me, even if I wasn’t fully aware of it at the time.
///If you were not collaborating with Billy who else would you like to do something like this with?
If I could choose anyone in the world then I would definitely love to work with David Choe. The guy is incredibly talented and is constantly producing new and exciting artwork. I think his loose, energetic and use of bright colours would be interesting combined with my bold line work and limited colour. Together I’m sure we could creative some nice mutant art baby.
If for some reason I had to choose someone else then it would be cool to work with the Rinpa team in Japan. Everything they do is completely original and the artwork tends to be very fluid, natural and only for the moment. A lot of their work isn’t around for a long time and is usually painted over shortly after….usually by themselves.
///If one song could describe your art what would that be?
This is a ridiculously tough question and I’m sure my answer will change a million times before this is even posted. .. but if I have to choose something on the spot then I’ll go with Electric Surfin Go Go by Polysics. Loud, in your face but clean and controlled at the same time. A lot of fun too. I can only hope my work contains all these qualities.

///What is Mauerkunst for you?
Mauer Kunst provides me with a way to interact directly with an audience, I’m always looking for new ways to bring art into peoples lives and Mauer Kunst is the perfect opportunity for me to do this.
///Is this the first time you have done something on this scale?
Working on a large scale has always been a dream of mine, the piece I perform at Mauer Kunst will be my largest to date. One day I’d like to be able to paint a whole room interior, or the side of a huge building.
///Any influences that will guide you in creating this piece?
Blu is a big influence on me in terms of using public space to create beautiful art work. He is full of original ideas and not afraid to do his own thing. I’m also a huge fan of Ian Stevenson and Luke Best, their work comes across is genuine and oozes style without being trendy.
///Any new ideas especially for the night?
I have peformed live art before but always in black and white (usually due to time constraints). At Mauer Kunst I will be painting in black white and red.

///How did you get into illustration?
I’ve always liked communicating and making people laugh, I find the I’m better at this with a pen than with words.
///If you were not collaborating with Will who else would you like to do something like this with?
I’d love to do an improvised piece of art work along side musicians making improvised music, something really challenging for both of us. Music is a big part of my life and influences the work I produce, It gives me a lot of energy and ideas when working.
///If one song could describe your art what would that be?
This is tricky, having a fondness for both music and art. Perhaps Lovely Allen by Holy Fuck. It’s uplifting but not cheesy, it’s complicated but not full of itself.
